Popping Noise When Operating Front Door.
Popping Noise When Operating Front Door.
The driver side door makes a loud, distinct popping noise when opening or closing. The door feels like it is ratcheting / jerking when it pops. The noise sounds like it is coming from the vicinity of the small "bar" that attaches to the door frame and then disappears into the door when operating. The door is fine when fully opened or closed.
Any suggestions of how to fix this?
Thanks much

Re: Popping Noise When Operating Front Door.
I think the bar you are talking about is what GM calls the door check. It's the detent that holds the door in the open position. It may be loose. Check to see if the bolts that hold it to the door are tight. If bolts are okay then you may need a new one. you could also see if lubing it might help with the noise.

Re: Popping Noise When Operating Front Door.
If we are talking about the same piece, then the door check is tight to the frame and I have tried lubricating it with no success.
Re: Popping Noise When Operating Front Door.
you could unbolt the door check and take it out and see if the noise is gone.

Re: Popping Noise When Operating Front Door.
Hmmmmm. Would I just unbolt it from the door frame....or would I have to remove the door panel or what?
Re: Popping Noise When Operating Front Door.
yes you have to remove the door panel to take it out. here's a video of that.

the part looks like the picture.
if you have something that can pry the door check out of the door, you could just unbolt the door check where it bolts to the body and carefully close the door. That will push the door closer into the door. when you open the door the check will stay in the door and the noise should be gone. Be careful because now there is nothing to keep the door from over extending and causing damage to the body. Then you will have to use something to pull the closer back out so you can bolt it back up when you are done checking it. That will be difficult and you may need a second person to hold the door so it won't swing too forward.
it might be better to just buy a new door check online for 15-25 dollars and just take the door panel off and put in the new one. It is very common for them to go bad.

Re: Popping Noise When Operating Front Door.
Ok. I recieved the part and took the door panel off. UNBELIEVABLY, there is no cutout in the door anywhere near the door check bolts. See Pics.
Anyone have any idea of how I am supposed to replace the check. Is there a way without taking off the door panel?
Thanks much.

Re: Popping Noise When Operating Front Door.
do you have a picture of the whole inside of the door? you should have access under the foam liner. maybe even through the speaker hole (speaker removed) if it gives you access to get your hand in far enough.
