There is a quick fix, but unfortunately it is only temporary and your problem will resurface at a later date for sure. You can attempt a manual re-learn procedure for the theft deterrent system. I will have our Admin post a link to the procedure in this thread...
Impala Theft Relearn Procedure

But, now on to your real problem. If you want this problem fixed permanently you will need to replace the ignition cylinder and Passlock housing. This comes as a complete unit, after being properly coded by your dealer, and would also require a re-learn procedure after replacement.

What is happening here is that the Passlock or Theft Deterrent system on your Impala is losing the electronic 'password' that the computer learns to know that is should start the car when you turn the ignition. This will usually set a trouble code in the Body Control Module and is very common for your car.

If you replace the ignition cylinder, and then re-learn the theft deterrent, your problem will be fixed.

A visual inspection will get you started, pay attention to the location of sensors and wiring.
Also, the 8'th vin digit (almost positive it's the 8'th) is the engine code.
Popular engine codes are letters like c, s, w, and z
If they're the same then the motor is at least the same version.

If the vin is different you'll have issues with the car wiring (at least)

you know, you might replace a lot of parts before you get it right. Before you throw a bunch of parts at it, (which is called the "shotgun" approach) yu should have the vehicle scanned. Scanning the data stream when the car acts up will be the easiest way to find out what the car is doing. It might be a fuel issue. It might be a TPS error. It might be either a crank or can issue. Recording the data stream will show you what the engine was responding to when the problem occurred. There are a lot of parts you could replace before you luck out and guess the right one. Or maybe not... you might replace a lot of parts and still not get it.

If you can't get a scanner that records the data stream see if you can find a shop that will do it for you. You will have to pay for their time and equipment but it may be cheaper that replacing parts that you didn't need.

2001 Impala grinding at specific RPM

Unread post by impala01 » Sun Dec 28, 2014 6:53 pm

For some time now my '01 Impala (163k miles) has sometimes made a brief grinding noise at 3100 RPM before it shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear, and has recently started doing the same at 2100 RPM between 1st and 2nd gear. It doesn't make the noise every time but the problem doesn't occur when the engine is revved with the transmission in neutral, which leads me to believe it's a transmission issue that is starting to get worse. The car doesn't shudder or hesitate in its acceleration. Any advice?

if you can repeat this condition regularly I would take it down to a trans shop and have them go on a test drive with you
