How To Add Transmission Fluid- Chevy Malibu

2004 Chevy Malibu 3400 6 cyl.
How many quarts of transmission fluid does my 2004 Chevy malibu hold? It is leaking & when i remove the cap to check has no dip stick should i be able to see fluid through the opening when hot. I but 2 quarts in but still don't see fluid. Please help me.

Answer:
You never will see fluid in that cap. That is just the fill cap. What you need to do is have engine running at normal operating temp. On the transmission housing of the rt. (passenger side) axle area, there is a level plug. It is a pipe plug. With engine running, if the fluid is just dribbling out, then it is full.

Question:
1997 Chevrolet Malibu. I want to buy this car off old man. It drives at 4000 rpms to go 100 kms per hour. Is this normal? Sounds like should be changing gears around 85-90,but it doesnt.

Answer:
Yes, 4k RPM is very high engine speed. The car should be at about 1,600 - 1,800. The transmission may not be going into overdrive. That is 4th gear.

Or possible the TCC- torque converter clutch is not engaging. If the check engine light was on then you need to get the codes scanned, although some transmission codes will not turn on the engine light. A scan is still needed. A mechanics with a good scan tool will be able to look at trans and engine data to see why the Tach is so high. He can determine if it is an internal problem.

It does sound like. The transmission may need to come out and get repaired. this can be expensive, so depending on how much the car is selling for, it is up to you decide if you ant to put more money into repairing it.

Question:
I have an automatic transmission and my vehicle will not engage into reverse. When put into reverse it just idles. It will go in drive and lags in low. Any suggestions?

Answer:
Your transmission has an internal problem. There is no electrical fault that will cause these problems. Possible parts such as a low roller clutch, sunshell, etc. This would need to have the transmission removed from your Malibu, taken apart and look for the failure. Depending on the shop you use, they will either sell you a rebuilt trans or fix yours.
