Pontiac Firebird Code P1404 EGR Problem

Question:
Would it be difficult for a fairly skilled auto hobbyist to replace the Exhaust Gas Recirculation(EGR) valve that is tripping the OBDII P1404 code, or would I be better off taking it somewhere to get it fixed, my problem is that I am a full time college student working part time, and my budget next to nothing, because I have no help from anyone. Thank you so much for any response you can offer. Pontiac Firebird 1998 3.8L V6 service engine soon.

Answer:
See picture below. Yes, if you have some mechanical knowledge, you should be able to perform this replacement. Just remove the 2 bolts and the valve comes off. Be sure to replace the gasket under it. Note: that code has also been related to carbon in the valve making it stick. You may want to remove it, tap in on the floor and see if a bunch of carbon comes out. Also use a small screwdriver and make sure that the valve pintle/pintles are not stuck. They should be able to be pushed into the valve easily. If not, that is your code P1404.

Plugged EGR valve passage with carbon can cause engine light code P1404.

Question:
Pontiac Firebird. V6 3.8 check engine light. Computer codes: bank 1 sensor 3 I had the codes ran for check engine light and the mechanic told me it was BANK ONE SENSOR 3. I dont know the location.

Answer:
You're talking about the heated oxygen sensors on your vehicle. Bank 1 is the left bank of the engine, and Bank 2 is the right side. When you have a Bank 1 Sensor 3 code, it is always the furthest oxygen sensor from the engine, usually right past the catalytic converter. Since both banks go into a single pipe, bank 1 is the continuation of the series. So you need to replace the oxygen sensor past the back side of the catalytic converter.
