How To Learn A New Oldsmobile Silhouette Key

Question:
2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette. I have lost my car key and went to a local GM dealership and bought a passkey III. I was told since I did not have the original key the only way to reset the code is to turn the car on with the passkey and let the alarm go off three times then insert the passkey again and hopefully the would change the code.

I learned that If that does not work the whole component would have to be replaced. Is there no other way to start my van than with this theft deterrent relearn?

Answer:
Here is the correct procedure. Be sure to follow exactly, and let me know what happened.

  1. With a master passkey III key (Black), turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Observe the Security telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn off.
  3. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.

Important: The vehicle learns the key transponder information and/or passwords on the ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.

With a master passkey III key, start the vehicle. The vehicle has now learned the key transponder information and the PCM has now learned the fuel continue password.

With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.

After a key has been learned, you can add other keys by starting van with the newly learned key, turn off, install a new key to be learned, turn ignition to ON position(not crank) for 5 seconds, then forward to START.
