Chevy Impala Transmission Solenoid A Code

Question:
I have the 4T40-E transmission in my Chevy Impala. The problem is it has a vibration from the stub shaft side. Is there a way i can remove the transaxle and remove the stub shaft in the trans to see whats wrong. Stubshaft is the short side found on the passengers side. Or any help with this problem will help. Thank you.

Answer:
If you are sure the problem is with the stub shaft, it can be removed without taking out the trans. After the axle is out, you can get behind the small portion of shaft that is sticking out with 2 screw drivers and pop it out. Place then 180 degrees from each other. It is held in with a clip that will let you pop the stub out. If there is a lot of play, then it is probably a worn out bushing and the transmission will have to come out and be disassembled. Might as well re-build it if you are that far into it and has a lot of miles on it. But the problem may be in the axle unless your sure about the stub shaft.

Question:
Transmission problem with my 2004 Chevy Impala. Engine size 3.4L. Shift solenoid A Code stored in computer. I got this code out of the OBD2 and it says shift solenoid A. I assume this is the on/off solenoids located in the valve body? Which one is solenoid A when looking at the valve body. I have not pulled the pan yet. Is it hard to get off? I have a lot of experience swapping engines and transmissions, just don't know for sure if this will fix the issue or not.

The fluid is a little dark like the tranny has been slipping and it does not shift quite right (slips sometimes). Did I catch it early enough or am I going to have to replace the whole tranny? Thanks for your help and i will give you guys a donation when possible.

Answer:
Assuming there is no debre in the bottom of the trans pan caused by an internal parts failure, and no other codes are stored then replacing the 1-2 shift solenoid (Shift Solenoid A) should fix condition, although this car has a lot of miles on it. In order to get to solenoids the transmission side cover will have to come off. This entails supporting the engine transmission assembly with support fixtures from the top.

Lowering the left side frame per the service manual instruction. IE- disconnect the ball joint, steering shaft, axle, transmission side mount, shields, brackets, harnesses, etc. The 1-2 shift solenoid is on the left side of the valve body, middle way up. It has one electrcial connector and just screws in.

Before replacement you should really do a resistance check to make sure it is faulty electrically. You would need a meter and schematic to do this. This test will not tell you if it is bad mechanically stuck, but that is not too common a anyway.

I would also suggest you add a bottle of transmission cleaner to the fluid after a filter change. Run it till it gets hot and then drain and fill the fluid again. This will help get out any dirt and clean the internal components of varnish.
