Chevy Silverado Blower Speeds Not Working

Question:
2001 Chevy Silverado extended cab. My a/c blower fan does not work on the first two speeds. It does work on 3-4-5 speeds. Where do I need to start looking? Does it have resistor strips?

Answer:
Yes, the a/c system does have a blower motor resistor assembly under the passenger side of the dash, next to the blower motor. That does sound like the most likely cause. The resistor receives voltage from the fan control switch on the a/c control head, and controls all speeds except HIGH. High is a different fuse and circuit.

* Update: Since this article was published, GM has issued a recall to repair the blower motor resistor and wiring harness for free.

Question:
I have a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado and my problem is that the blower motor fan control only works on position 5. I would like to know where it is located and what tools I will need to use. I know its behind the glove box but I’m not sure if it is ok to take apart the big black plastic molding looking thing (it looks like duct work). I have already bought the a/c Delco resistor for it. I think the tools needed are a 7mm, 6mm and 5mm socket. Are these all the tools? Thanks for whatever assistance you can give. Have a good weekend!

Answer:
The blower motor resistor is located under the passenger side of the dash, not really the glove box. Remove the lower panel. The resistor bolt into the HVAC case with 2 screws, right next to the fan motor. Make sure the connector and terminals are not burned as well. If so, you will need to replace that connector with wires. The dealer has a kit for that.

Question:
How do i remove cover to blower motor which quit working? 1998 Silverado 1500 4x4. 5.7L.

Answer:
The easiest way to access the blower motor on your vehicle is to remove the glove box. There a couple small bolts at the hinge on the bottom and a release near the compartment back. The lower kick panel trim needs to be removed as well, which is the same type of screw.

The blower motor will be right there behind the glove box area, and usually has 5 small 7/32 head screws holding it in place. Disconnect the electrical connector and replace with a new blower motor. You might want to check the blower resistor which is located near the blower motor. If the motor isn't working, the resistor could be the cause.

If your Silverado has the hard black rubber cover over the blower motor, then before you can get to the screws you need to cut that off. If you lay on the floor and look up closely at it, you will see that there is sort of an outline that goes around the blower motor. Use a razor knife to cut along that outline then remove the cover. Know you can get to the screws that hold the blower motor into the dash of your Silverado. You dont actually need to replace that cover after the new blower motor is installed, it only serves as a noise deadening insulator, but you can if you want to.

Question:
How do you replace the upper ball joint on a 2000 chevy Silverado z71 4x4 1500 ext cab 3door 5.3 engine can I press it out or do I haft to buy the upper arm.

Answer:
Yes, you can just replace the upper ball joint on your truck. It is pressed in from the factory, so you will have to press the old ball joint out and press the new one into the control arm. The best way to do this is to remove the control arm from the truck. Since you have torsion bars and not coil springs, you really don't need to support any weight on the front suspension, but a jack or jack stand under the lower control arm aids in movement and re-alignment of the components. If you don't have the required special tools to do the pressing in and out of the ball joint, you could also just buy the control arm, since it has a new ball joint installed already. Either way, it's not that difficult of a job if you have the tools.
