2005 Pontiac Grand Prix

question = We have a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3800 series engine and
the car makes a whirring noise (Sound like a manual transmission in
reverses) when accelerating from a stop. It first started only when
turning but now does it heading straight also. Any ideas?
JK:
If the noise you are describing is related to engine speed, and not vehicle
speed, then you may have low power steering fluid, or another belt driven
accessory making the noise. Check the power steering fluid level first.
If that is ok, then a belt idler pulley or alternator may be the culprit. Removing the
belt and starting the car for a few seconds will at least tell that it is drive belt
related or not if the noise goes away.
