Expedition with pulsing rumble strip noise when turning
Radical Clicking Solenoid Ford Expedition
I have a 2000 Expedition. It has a radical clicking, so I replaced the solenoid and that didn't change anything. So I removed the starter and bench tested it and that ran fine. I noticed that when I would connect the small wire to the solenoid that's when the clicking would start and smoke from the battery negative terminal. So something is grounding out? How do I go about finding the source of the problem. Also where do the wires go to from the battery and from the solenoid so I can trace them?
Re: Radical Clicking Solenoid Ford Expedition
You've obviously got a short in the wiring somewhere which is causing the 'clicking' noise in the solenoid. If you're getting smoke from the wire or battery cable, then it's a hot wire that is directly shorted to ground when you attach it. As for where the wires go, well that's the fun part of actually 'tracing' wires. Start taking the harness apart and follow that wire until you find the problem. If you can get your hands on a schematic that would help greatly. Maybe try your local Ford dealer.

Expedition with pulsing rumble strip noise when turning
I have a 2004 Expedition that has started a pulsing feeling and sounding like going over rumble strips. It occurs while turning left or right at low speeds such as when leaving a parking spot or turning at an intersection. The pulse frequency and loudness is growing over the past 6 months. Ford service personnel and others have not been able to identify it. And, of course, it doesn't seem to occur on test drives. I usually run it in RWD but have also had it occur in AWD. The car has about 70K miles on it. 4X4 is used, as needed, through the Pennsylvania winters. I just had to have the rear diff rebuilt which was the first sizable issue it had since the purchase in 2004. Any thoughts?

where does the noise sound like it's coming from? where do you feel it at? need more info. do you feel it in your steering wheel? your brake pedal, the seat, coming from the front, left front, right front, from the rear end area? The trans or transfer case?
TSB
reference # 08-21-11, on date 10-27-08
various 1997-2008 vehicles with either 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive and equipped with control trac may exhibit a shudder on acceleration/deceleration, binding in slow speed turns or noise from the front driveline and/or transfer case. the shudder/binding may be due to incorrect tire circumference or improper tire inflation pressures.
It goes on to diagnose problems tied to this TSB. basically saying that tire circumferences must be within 1/2 inch side to side and also within 1/2 inch average between front and rear tires.

I do not feel it through the brake peddle. It is felt through the steering wheel and under the front floor area on left and right sides. The car got new continental tires about a year ago.

tsb says that even air pressure may cause problem. If you take it back to the dealer you might want to ask about this tsb
