1997 Jimmy will not start
WE are missionaries in Guatemala and have a 1997 GMC Jimmy, we never had a problem with it starting until we had the brake Master cylinder and Brake Booster changed (new from the USA) the day after they were put on we could not get the car to start. If the mechanic poured gas in the carb. it started but only then. A new fuel pump was put on (also from the USA) and it only started 3 days in a row..( not well). We have had it back to the Guatemalan mechanic he said the pressure measurement is around 50psi....he thinks the fuel pump that is new from the USA is bad...however we still think it has something to do with when they changed the brake cylinder and brake booster. We need help, our car has been at the mechanic for over 2 weeks...he has tried lots of things..he really does not know..we are frustrated to say the least...If we pour gas in the carb in the a.m. the car will start right up and start again if restarted within a few hours but by morning it just will not start...they have put in a new in line fuel filter, new fuel pump, cleaned the fuel injectors.....any helpful ideas....

fuel pressure for the SFI system is 56 to 62psi. If you have the CFI, spec is 60-66psi. If your fuel pressure is only 50psi you are under spec for either system.

Yes the pressure is lower than the reading you posted, so our question is what is causing the low pressure and what do we need to do or check to fix the problem? Since we already put a new fuel pump on and the pressure is still around 50psi we or the mechanic do not know what to do, the mechanic wants to put another fuel pump on another $300.

before you replace the pump again you might want to find out what is the right pump for your vehicle. there are three pumps for your year and make. Usually you look for the number on your old pump. But that may be long gone by now. Or you can use your vin# and RPO codes. You should call a GM dealer and get the correct pump number. They will need at least the last 8 digits of your vin#. Most after market manufacturers can cross the number into their line of pumps.
