possible high ehxaust manifold temp.

Unread post by jeffyg » Sun Aug 11, 2013 3:16 pm

hi i have a 1989 olds 88 with the 3800 engine, i was wondering if it is normal for the exhaust manifold temp. measured with a non-contact gun aimed at the manifold when warm and idling should be 500 to 600 degrees? also the temp gauge runs at 220,the fan seems to cycle at about this temp and hold it in this range. just seems kind of high to me,my other vehicles manifold temps are 200 to 375. thanks for any thoughts.

around 214 degrees F is when the fan will come on. It will turn off when the temp drops below 210. If it gets hot, up to 226, the high speed will turn on. (or the high side pressure gets over 275psi)

temperatures on the exhaust manifold vary. If you car is running fine and the fuel trims look normal I wouldn't worry about the exact temp. Use a scanner and verify that the fuel trim isn't running lean and the vacuum is normal.
