98 Chevy 2500 Z71 Lost All Gears

Unread post by bigdave75 » Tue Aug 13, 2013 10:02 pm

hey guys, i have a 98 2500 Z71 that is having some issues. it started a few months ago when i was helping a buddy move. at first the tranny would shift outta od all on its own. this lasted a couple months. then while i was headed home with my buddies stuff i lost all gears. the sound that came from the drivetrain was a sound like it got put in park while the truck was still moving. like i said i lost all gears and it has got me puzzled. any ideas thoughts or comments would be great. my tranny is 4L80E with a np 241c t-case.

The ratcheting sound you are describing means something broke inside the transmission.
Probably a gear.
Sounds like you are going to need to have it removed, taken apart and repaired.
You drop the pan and will probably see metal chunks.

Could it be the transfer case

Yes, it is possible, but with the first problem of trans going in and out of overdrive, this cannot be the transfer case. So, it seems like a transmission problem.

I will drop the pan and see if there is any metal or any thing else that doesn't belong in it.
