Chevy Silverado Stalls When Driving

Question:
Truck is shutting down on me while driving. We were at Walmart and it died while pulling out, then it died driving out of, then we got going up to speed and it was dieing and starting back up by itself while i was on the highway. 1997 chevy Silverado 5.7 ltr. Had a rebuilt transmission, new cylinder unit, Fuel pump.

So we pulled over and looked under the hood and didn't know what to look for so we just went on home. It was like it was posessed or something. I would appreciate it if you could give us some kind of idea what could be wrong with it. Thank you, christy.

Answer:
This is a strange problem to have your Chevy Silverado die out at idle and while driving at speed. Usually it is one or the other.

Stalling at low speeds in the parking lot is usually just carbon in the throttle. That can be fixed with a good cleaning using carb cleaner or SeaFoam. Then take for a drive on the highway to sort of blow it out. But that would not explain stalling out and starting back up while driving. That could be a couple different things.

If you are loosing all electrical power, it could be something as simple as a loose battery cable. Other possibilities are a loose ground wire. A common one is on the back top of the passenger side of the engine. It is a small black wire that bolts just behind the cylinder head against the firewall. If you can find it, give it a little tug to see if it breaks.

Another common problem on this truck is a bad ignition switch. This is what the key goes into. It is attached to the ignition key cylinder. The ignition switch feeds power to most of the truck electrical system and can cause these problems. You can try to tap on the head of the key with a small hammer, and just under the key on the bottom of the steering column with the vehicle running, Sometimes this will cause a faulty switch to act up and make the truck stall out.

Question:
My truck stalls when I hit the brakes and turn into parking spots. Also happens when I turn on the fan. My 2003 Chevy Silverado stalls 5.3 L Vortec. We replaced the alternator.

Answer:
A common cause for these conditions is carbon ion the throttle body and plate. Have the throttle body and plate cleaned with a carbon cleaner. Be sure to get it clean. Open the throttle and clean the entire body and the plate. This will usually fix this condition. This is assuming there is no vacuum leak, as that can also cause a low speed/idle stall.

2004 Chevy 1500. Vortec 4.3 V6.
Warning lights = yes. Computer codes: misfire P0300. Repairs for this problem: new spark plugs wires cap rotor. Question: my truck misses when it rains.

Answer:
So, something is getting wet or has moisture intrusion that is causing your problem. Since you have replaced the usual causes of this problem, I'm going to say that you most likely need an ignition coil.

If the coil is even slightly bad, it will arc on the metal that surrounds it and cause your vehicle to run rough and misfire. You can check this with a spray bottle filled with water, and while the engine is running, lightly soak the coil and connectors and watch for arcing. It might help to have someone brake torque the vehicle while you do this, just to amplify the situation.
