How To Check Your Engine Oil

On a warmed up engine, turn off engine and wait a few minutes for oil to drain back down into the crankcase. Remove the dipstick and check that the oil is to the full mark. Add the appropriate amount/weight that your vehicle calls for.

The rule of thumb for oil changes is every 3,000 miles, or 3 months, whichever comes first. Many of todays GM vehicles have an oil life monitoring system. It is completely up to you whether to follow the 3,000 miles rule, or your vehicles oil life monitor system.

Just remember, the manufacturer has put millions of dollars into developing the software for this system, and it is a very accurate gauge of your vehicles oil life. The system will need to be re-set after an oil change. The procedure can be different between model and year of vehicle. See your owners manual for this procedure.
